There is nothing quite like looking out at a lush, green lawn during our beautiful Utah summers. But right now, beneath that beautiful blanket of green, a hidden enemy could be quietly throwing a dinner party—at the expense of your grass roots.

We are talking about white grubs.
If you want to keep your yard looking beautiful and prevent those heartbreaking dead, brown patches, the time to act is right now. Don't worry, though—we’ve got your back! Here is our favorite, battle-tested strategy for protecting your lawn using two products we swear by: Hi-Yield® Bug Blaster Plus Above & Below and Hi-Yield® Systemic Insect Spray.
Why Grubs Love Our Northern Utah Lawns
If you've noticed June beetles buzzing around your porch lights lately, you're seeing the source of the problem. In late spring and early summer, these adult beetles lay their eggs right in our soil. By mid-summer, those eggs hatch into hungry little larvae (grubs) that munch directly on your grass roots.
Because they eat the roots, the grass can no longer absorb water. It looks like standard drought stress at first—wilting and thinning—but eventually turns into dead brown patches that won't green up no matter how much you water.
The Spongy Turf Test: Want to know if you have a grub problem? Give your brown patches a tug. If the turf feels spongy and rolls up easily like a piece of old carpet, grubs have eaten the roots away.
Our Go-To Strategy: The Two-Treatment Shield
Over the years, we’ve found that the absolute secret to winning the war on grubs is prevention. It is infinitely easier (and way cheaper) to stop them before they grow large and destroy your root system.
To get complete control through the entire peak damage season, we recommend a simple two-step application schedule:
Application 1: Do it NOW. Applying right now targets the newly hatching larvae right as they emerge, stopping them in their tracks.
Application 2: Hit them again in 6 to 8 weeks. This second round ensures season-long protection, catching any late-season hatchers and keeping your soil safe into the fall.
Choose Your Weapon: Granular vs. Liquid
We stock two incredible options from Hi-Yield in the shop, depending on how you prefer to work in your yard. Both do a fantastic job of penetrating the soil to protect your lawn's root zone.
Option A: Hi-Yield Bug Blaster Plus Above & Below (Granules)
If you love pushing a lawn spreader on a Saturday morning, this is your go-to.
Why we love it: It creates a systemic shield below the dirt to wipe out grubs while simultaneously taking care of surface nuisances like ants, fleas, and chinch bugs. It's a fantastic two-for-one.
Option B: Hi-Yield Systemic Insect Spray (Liquid)
If you prefer a quick liquid application via a hose-end sprayer, reach for this bottle.
Why we love it: This spray is absorbed by the grass and moves down into the root system. When grubs try to feed, the party is officially over.
Our Insider Tip: Apply this during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or evening) so it doesn't dry out too fast, and give the lawn a light watering afterward to help it soak in.
