How to Plant Grass Seed
- Prepare the area: Rake and groom the soil to the desired grade. Remove large rocks or debris. Small rocks are fine—grass will grow over them. This step is essential; once the seed grows in, it’s much harder to fix uneven spots.
- Fertilize: Right after prepping the soil is the best time to fertilize. Use 16-16-16 or Ferti-lome New Lawn Starter. Natural Guard Humate also works great—ask us for details!
- Roll the area: Use a lawn roller to lightly compact the soil and reveal low/high spots that need adjusting. This creates an ideal seed bed.
- Rake again: Lightly rake the entire area after rolling to create 1/4" deep grooves in the soil. This improves seed-to-soil contact.
- Apply seed: Choose a variety suited to your conditions—sun, shade, and traffic. We recommend Magic Carpet as our top grass seed blend.
- Roll again: Lightly roll the seeded area to press seed into the soil. This prevents erosion and improves germination. Don’t skip this step!
- Start watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy. Start with 3–4 light waterings per day (10 minutes each). Reduce if puddles form; increase if the soil dries out between sessions.
- Wait and mow: Most grass germinates in 1–3 weeks. You should be mowing in 6–8 weeks. Fertilize again about 4–6 weeks after germination to help the grass thicken and spread.
